De 2015 a 2024: Tecnología, Innovación y Modernización en el Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Abstract

This paper reviews the main milestones and results in technological innovation carried out by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the last decade within the innovation framework established by the major projects called ‘LPA Blue Intelligence’ and the Municipal Digital Agenda 2021–2025. From the definition of the actions of the original Smart City to the use of state-of-the-art digital tools such as the Digital Twin of the city, the evolution of the use of technologies in local administration has gone hand in hand with citizens’ demands for a sustainable environment, efficient administration and effective general public services. The examples developed in this article, such as LPA Smart Beach or the smart wastewater management system, taken from the list of completed or underway projects, are a reflection of the effort that this Administration has been making continuously since 2015 to achieve these community objectives. However, the achievements and results obtained are just as important as the future challenges that arise from the evolution of both, technologies and the collective needs of the city’s inhabitants; challenges for the future (immediate and medium term) that also have their place in this text and in which Artificial Intelligence and the modernisation of the Corporation’s own internal management and decision-making processes are no strangers. As a general conclusion, we can draw the lesson that, in the medium and long term, realistic, flexible planning, with a rapid capacity to adapt to changes and effective coordination between the different services and departments of the institution, are the ‘secret ingredients’ that bring projects to a successful conclusion with a firm step towards success.
